All I know is that it's fun to play, and fun to be learning from the computer on how to improve my skill. This is my first computer game, so I have nothing to compare it to.
I also appreciate the sound effects- from the rolling of the dice to the clinking of the backgammon pieces. I just got the game a couple of weeks ago, and so have only just begun to try the different settings- not only are there different skill levels you can set for the the computer, but three different strategies to choose from as well- "conservative", "normal", or "aggressive." I am grateful to David for developing such a well thought out game, and for his expertise in backgammon ability and computer programming to really make it fun and challenging to play against the computer. It is especially satisfying to win from both seats! And when I lose, it's fun to figure out what I could have done differently. I appreciate that the program allows you to replay a game, and also to switch roles. I thought that I was a pretty good player, but it turns out that at the "club champ" setting, the computer beats me quite often. The simulation of the game is very good, and as a backgammon player all I can say is that the only thing that I miss is the dice rolling.I did not expect to enjoy playing backgammon against a computer, but it sure is fun. In conclusion: nothing replaces a real backgammon board, but this game can get close to the feeling that a real backgammon game gives you. Luckily this behavior can be modified from the 'Preferences'. Absolute Backgammon supports any Mac OS above 8.6 and but with a dependency: CarbonLib under older OSes. This game has the advantage of running under multiple versions of Mac OS. The idea that's behind this game is also found in David's Backgammon.However, this game isn't as customizable as David's Backgammon is.
